Heated argument between MP and police in Jaffna: Minister Tiran calls for report | Sri Lanka News


Public Security Minister Tiran Alles has called for a report regarding the incident that occurred in Jaffna between Ceylon Tamil Congress leader MP Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam and police officers.

 

A heated argument erupted between MP Ponnambalam and officers in civvies including an intelligence officer when the MP arrived at a public meeting held at Vadamarachchi East recently.

 

It was reported that the MP had gone to the meeting without police security and intelligence officers had been deployed for his protection. 

 

A video of the MP trying to attack and behaving violently has also been shared on social media.

 

According to the video, the MP was seen demanding the identity card from an officer who was in civvies and deployed to an examination centre in the area. The police officer said that he would nor give him the identity card as the MP had used indecent language. Ponnambalam said he will file action before court against the police officer concerned.

 

The MP was later seen telling a senior police officer who had arrived at the scene not to deploy police officers to the area who do not know the basic law.

 

The Public Security Ministry said Minister Alles had called for a report over the incident and that they will report the facts regarding the incident to court on Monday.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
