Maithri turns into a poet for a newly wed couple | Sri Lanka News

A video has been found circulating on social media showing former President Maithripala Sirisena showing off his poetry reading skills by reciting a 'Hitiwana Kavi' in an age-old style at a wedding ceremony held recently.

While reciting the poem, the former President congratulated the newly wed couple at the ceremony by tapping the lectern.

The video shows the participants at the wedding ceremony appreciating the poem by clapping loudly much to the delight of the former President.

The english translation of the basic poem he recited is as follows :

“I must say Sathya is a good child. Sathya has grown up well. Sathya is well educated and a good person. Sathya is not bad. Sathya is good, Kasun is good. Both of them are good.” (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
