Increase in afternoon thunderstorms, heavy rains today | Sri Lanka News

A significant increase in thunderstorm activity with more than 100mm rainfall is expected in the afternoon, the Forecasting Division of the National Meteorological Centre said.

Its weather forecast for today said thundershowers would occur over most parts of the country after 2.00 pm.

Heavy showers above 100 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western and Southern Provinces.

Showers may occur in the Eastern Province and in Mullaitivu and Hambanthota districts during the morning too.

Therefore, the public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary, localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, in a forecast for the sea areas around the country, the Meteorological Centre said thundershowers would occur in the sea areas around the island.

The winds would be south-easterly over the sea areas with speeds reaching up to 30 kmph.

The sea areas around the island would be mild to moderate. Strong, gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected temporarily during thundershowers. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
