Water rates to be hiked again: Water Board | Sri Lanka News

The tariff rate of water needs to be raised again soon, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) Deputy General N.K. Ranatunga said today.

He said the Water Board had to bear additional costs due to the recent increase in electricity charges.

“With the increase in the electricity tariff, the water tariff too had to be increased in September last year after 10 years. Again the electricity tariff was increased in January 2023, but that increase was not added to the water bill yet,” he said.

“However, the Water Board had to bear additional costs while managing the new electricity rates. But we would not be able to do this for long,” he said.

He said that the Water Board incurs an additional Rs 4 billion because of the electricity tariff increase.
He said that the water demand has also increased by about 10 percent due to the prevailing hot weather conditions. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
