Six persons including the principal and three teachers of a private school at Bokkawala in Kandy have been arrested for brutally attacking a group of students at the school.
Police said Kandy Division Children and Women's Bureau have launched an inquiry after some girls and boys, between 15 and 17 years of age, studying in the private school were mercilessly beaten in the hostel by the principal and teachers of the school on Sunday night for disciplinary reason in the school hostel.
Inquiries revealed that disciplinary action had been taken against five male students who had secretly entered the girls’ hostel on Sunday night (12). It is alleged that they had entered the girl’s hostel to meet five female students with their consent. Police said the students concerned had been subject to assault and cruelty and even their hair had been cut.
Police said the school hostel wardens were also among the arrested.
The suspects have been remanded until March 20 after being produced before the Kandy Magistrate.
The affected students were sent to the Kandy Hospital JMO for medical inspection. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
