In response to the remarks by opposition leader Sajith Premadasa that Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) is not obliged to support deals with the International Monetary Fund or any other international funding agency, State Minister of Finance Shehan Semasinghe, said that it is sad to see how an opposition leader tries to misuse the economic crisis over his political agenda.
Sajith Premadasa speaking at a Local Government election campaign in Kalutara said the SJB is not obliged to support deals with the International Monetary Fund or any other international funding agency as the current government does not have the mandate to sign such an agreement.
State Minister Semasinghe further questioned that if there were no reforms which were to be carried out, then what was the plan to offer people some relief caused from the economic downfall.
He emphasized that IMF has not imposed any conditions and the government has done the reformations only to make sure that the burden over the economy is relieved.
The State minister said if there was any plan that the opposition leader had to make sure that the country was stable with a strong economy, then it should be presented to the public at least in his election campaigns.
“We know the reformations are to a certain extent a burden to our people. But it would only be for a short time period. Afterwards, people would feel the release,” he said.
“We, as a government, have got together to overcome this economic crisis. We have left our politics aside and all of us have got together to implement many reforms that are needed. Also, we have already completed the requirements for the IMF approval and as a country, with the financial assurances, we have come to a visible stability for certain extent. Even international investments are also started to flow in. With these positive indications, we can assure that we are heading towards a strong economic stability. So, the statements over political agendas would be just a play on words for the greed of power,” he said.
