Investigations into the death threats on Election Commission members have revealed that the threats made to them were from a foreign country.
Three members of the Election Commission. S.B. Divaratna, K.P.P. Pathirana and M.M Mohamed have received death threats over the phone warning them to resign from their posts.
Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said that the CID is investigating the incident and armed policemen have been deployed to the residences of three members.
He said according to the investigations by the CID, it was disclosed that the number was registered to a resident in Galle area. When the officers went there they found the person who is currently overseas and that he has no knowledge about those threatening calls.
It was also learnt that the threatening calls and the text messages were sent using the same number from a foreign country.
He said the CID also sought assistance of the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission and Sri Lanka Mobitel over the investigations. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
