The March 9 Local Government election would be a turning point in Sri Lanka's political history and a new direction in where the country is heading, National People's Power (NPP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said today.
Speaking at the NPP Bank and Finance Forum at Galadari Hotel, he said they could turn around the LG polls as a remarkable turning point in Sri Lanka's political history and the country's way-foward.
“If we can pass through this milestone, we can easily conquer the other obstacles as well,” he said.
Dissanayake said the government made every effort to postpone the LG polls where all four attempts out of the five were defeated.
“There are only five stages in conducting an election. They are declaring an election, accepting deposits, accepting nominations, declaring the election date and conducting the election. The government tried to disrupt all four stages but they were succussfully defeated. There is only one step to succeed which is the court decision on February 10. We hope the Court will not give any ruling to stop the election,” he said.
He said the NPP is ready to take up the challenge of creating a strong foundation where the country could be developed adding that the foundation of the country is cracked and weak.
“There should be a strong foundation to develop the country. We must have a new Constitution, new system of governance free of fruad and corruption, efficient public service, supremacy of law, country with international recognition, Peace and harmony among the people . The country should be developed on this foundation. Having Port City and Highways will not takre the country foward. Our foundation is cracked. We need to mend it. It is a political action. The NPP is ready to take up that political action and build the country on that strong foundation,” he said. (Ajith Siriwardana)
