At least 151 migrants among 300 Sri Lankans who were rescued on the high seas between the Philippines and Vietnam were brought into the country last night.
Accordingly, the CID will record statements from the migrants. 143 males and seven women and a children were among those that arrived last night.
Vietnamese Coast Guard vessels last month rescued 303 illegal migrants from Sri Lanka, including many children, who were at risk, drifting on the high seas between Vietnam and the Philippines, when their vessel had broken down.
It was later found that the Sri Lankans were heading to Canada from Myanmar.
However, the Sri Lankans had requested the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to not return them to Sri Lanka and instead resettle them in a third country, as refugees.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
