Naval and fishing communities are cautioned not to venture into the deep sea areas off the coast until further notice due to the deep depression over the Southeast Bay of Bengal, the Meteorology Department said.
They said the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Kankesanturai, Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Southwest Bay of Bengal until further notice as they were declared unsafe to sail due to cyclonic storm “Mandous”.
The deep depression is located 370 km east of Trincomalee and it is forming into a cyclonic storm.
Around midnight tomorrow (9), the cyclonic storm is expected to move west-northwestwards and cross the coasts of Northern Tamil Nadu, Puduchery, and Southern Andhra Pradesh over the southwest bay of Bengal.
Maximum wind speeds in the range from 70 to 80 km/h could be expected with gusts could reach 90 km/h in coastal areas. Heavy showers or thundershowers and rough to high tides could also be expected in the aforementioned sea areas. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
