A mechanism is being prepared to provide some relief to teachers who have financial constrains to spend on sarees to wear for school, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said today.
He told Parliament that he regretted to hear that some teachers are facing economic issues to buy and wear sarees to school.
“There were media reports that some teachers are finding it difficult spend to buy and wear sarees to school due to economic hardships. I regretted about them. Those who brought in this saree saga should be responsible for this. We are preparing a mechanism to provide some relief to the teachers who have economic hardships.” he said.
The Minister said this in response to a remark made by SJB MP Rohini Kaviratne on the saree saga.
She said the circular issued by the Public Administration Ministry Secretary has not specified the dress code either for teachers or public servants.
She said the issue is not the saree worn by the teachers, but the quality of education in schools. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)
