Sri lanka News – Croplife sri Lanka, a industry association has warned that there are smuggled agro-chemicals in Sri Lanka which may be below the required standard as the country is in the grip of the worst currency crisis in the history of its central bank.

Former Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa banned agrochemicals as money was printed for stimulus.

A survey conducted in the last quarter of 2021 had shown that cost of crop production had risen 67 percent but yields had fallen 54 percent.

The agro-chemical ban and forex shortages had led to smuggling. Some of the smuggled products could be below standard.

“Along with shortage of herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, fertilizers and seeds, substandard fake products have been smuggled into the country,” Chamenda Wijeratne, President of CropLife Sri Lanka told a forum in Colombo.

He said farmers are unaware of the correct procedure for using some of the smuggled products where are not registered or approved for use by the Registrar of Pesticides, labels of some products had instructions in different languages.

“In this situation, we are working to implement a comprehensive programme to protect our agriculture industry and farmers,: Wijeratne said.

“Our aim is to establish a more productive agribusiness while ensuring the safety of farmers consumers and the environment.”
