Sri lanka News – Sri Lanka has 200 billion rupees of arrears to suppliers mainly to thnose carried out construction projects, Treasury Secretary Mahinda Siriwardene said as the country tries to emerge from the worst currency crisis in the history of the central bank.

“We have unpaid bills of about 200 billion (rupee),” Secretary Siriwardene atold a forum at Sri Lanka’s central bank.

“Mainly those are to the construction and some other institutions. As a result I know the pain these specific sector are going through.

“Unfortunately the government is not in a position to pay them.”

Sri Lanka is finding it difficult to manage day to day expenses involving salary payments are subsidies with daily revenues, he said making it difficult to accommodate requests from the private sector. (Colombo/Nov17/2022)
