A ship carrying 41,876 metric tonnes of Muriate of Potash (MoP) fertilizer is scheduled to sail into the port of Colombo on December 2 from Canada, the Agriculture Ministry said.
Subject minister Mahinda Amaraweera, said the consignment was procured with a loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
MoP is to be applied between four and six weeks after sowing or planting paddy.
Therefore, the farmers in the country will be given the opportunity to use MoP for cultivation at the appropriate time.
The volume of fertilizer recommended by the Agriculture Department for one hectare is 60kg. It can be applied in two segments – 25 and 35kg, the minister added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
