Sri lanka News – Sri Lanka’s first recorded case of monkeypox, a patient who had arrived from Dubai on November 01, is being treated at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (IDH) and the patient’s condition is stable, health officials said.
Upon arrival in Sri Lanka, the patient had gone to a sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic in Colombo, on November 02, with enlarged lymph nodes and exhaustion with fever and skin blisters.
The clinic had forwarded the patient’s blood sample to the Medical Research Institute (MRI) which had confirmed that he was infected with the monkeypox virus.
“After confirming the disease, the Epidemiology unit haswithout any delay quarantined his family, neighbors and friends,” Deputy Director General of Health Services Hemantha Herath told EconomyNext on Friday November 04.
“We are unable to provide any personal details of the patient at the moment.”
Herath said treatment methods similar to those used in treating chicken pox (Varicella) infections will be used to treat the monkeypox patient.
“After coming to the country fortunately he has not been in contact with anyone in a way that the disease can be passed,” Herath said.
“No other patients have been detected so far”.
The patient’s was the seventh sample that checked by the MRI for suspected monkeypox. All other six samples came back negative, he said. (Colombo/Nov05/2022)
