Sri lanka News – Sri Lanka has seen an increase in its overall crime amid the island’s worst currency crisis in decades, police statistics show.

There has been an increase in vehicle theft, with this year’s thefts totaling at 1,406 until September 2022, out of which there were 12 buses, 25 vans, 16 lorries, 14 cars, 311 three wheelers, 1,016 motorcycles and 12 other vehicles stolen between January and September 2022, according to the police media division.

Transport providers and the industry claim that vehicle theft has increased since the industry underwent a spike in sparepart costs after vehicle imports were halted.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka recorded 435 homicides in the first nine months of the year, while last year saw 403 homicides. The country saw an increase in the number of shootings that were directly linked to the underworld.

Sri Lanka is seeing an increase in crime amidst the ongoing currency crisis as hapless citizens resort to crime and theft in the face of growing hardships, economists say.

Cattle and property theft has also seen an increase, police said, attributing it to a “rough patch” the dairy industry is going through in terms of production and dispatch.

M G Thushara, who had his cattle taken away from him one night, told EconomyNext: “We used to make a living off the cows and hens we had and one morning when we got up we had lost everything.”

Meanwhile, 1,500 rapes including statutory rape and rape of children have been reported around the island. Up to 199 rapes, 951 statutory rapes and 273 rape cases on children were reported from January to September.

According to the National STD/AIDS Control Programme, 4,556 HIV patients have been recorded in the first quarter of 2022 up 11.8 percent from 4,073 in 2021 first quarter. (Colombo/Nov05/2022)
