Sri lanka News – Sri Lanka’s ministry of health says it wants to reassure the public that monkeypox can be contained and that there is no need to shut down the economy as the country has the resources to combat any outbreaks.

The health ministry made this statement on Saturday November 05 after Sri Lanka confirmed its first recorded case of monkeypox after a returnee to the island from Dubai tested positive for the virus the previous day.

The patient is being treated at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (IDH) and his condition is stable, health officials said.

Director of the ministry’s epidemiology unit Dr Samitha Ginige said: “Immunity of each patient is different and the body can overcome the illness and there is more than one treatment.”

The island’s health authorities said back in August that Sri Lanka had the equipment and medication needed to tackle the Sexually Transmitted Disease.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared in July that the outbreak of monkeypox was a public health emergency. Sri Lanka was handed over real-time PCR test kits for monkeypox to Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella on August 05, each of which may be used for diagnosis of up to 730 monkeypox cases.

Health Services Director General Dr Asela Gunawardena said people need not be alarmed following the detection of a monkeypox-infected individual in Sri Lanka and that the situation is under control. There no need for public panic, he said.

“This virus doesn’t spread like the COVID-19 virus. There is no need to shut down the airports and shopping centers in fear. Sri Lanka is blessed with adequate facilities and sufficient medicine to treat the infected,” said Gunawardena. (Colombo/Nov05/2022)
