Though Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera has invited Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake in writing to attend a discussion at 12 noon yesterday (11) on urea fertilizer tender for the Maha Season, no one has turned up for the meeting.
The minister has also informed them to send a representative if they are unable to participate.
The Dinamina newspaper meanwhile reported that Wasantha Samarasinghe, Secretary of the Inter-Company Employees’ Union and Namal Karunaratne, President of the All Ceylon Farmers’ Federation, have also been informed through phone to join the discussion.
In addition to this, an open invitation has been extended through the media to trade unions and parties who have continuously criticized this fertilizer tender in recent days and it was reported that none of them or their representatives have participated in this discussion.
Only Mr. Samarasinghe has informed the Ministry that he will not be able to attend as he has other commitments.
Minister Amaraweera, who expressed his regret in this regard, said the invitations were extended not only to discuss the fertilizer tender but also to get their ideas and suggestions for the development of the agricultural sector of the country.
He said he believed that many important decisions could have been made if those parties participated in this discussion.
