Jathika Jana balawegaya (JJB) Leader MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake said the tourism sector will be given priority when developing the national economy.
He expressed these views at the Tourism Entrepreneurs Forum held at the Galadari Hotel yesterday (27).
Mr. Dissanayake asked what place did the tourism sector have in Sri Lanka’s economy before the covid-19 pandemic and the Easter Sunday attacks.
“The largest number of tourists arrivals to Sri Lanka was recorded in 2018 which was about 2.3 million who brought an income of about USD 4.3 billion. This amounted to about 4.9% of the Gross Domestic Product.
“The tourism sector provided direct and indirect employment opportunities of around 400,000. It is clear from these figures and information that the tourism sector holds an important place in the economy. We need to figure out where to place the tourism sector in our economy.”
“Our economic strategy plays an important role here. There are several important areas we need to consider when shaping our economic strategy. We believe that the location of our country, the natural resources, the nature of human resources, the nature of geopolitics and the civilization that this country has built upon are of paramount importance,” he said.
