General Secretary of Ceylon Teachers’ Union – Mr. Joseph Stalin says that with the government deciding that the schools should pay the water bills, that burden will also be placed on the parents.
He further points out that many schools that have unpaid water bills are now taking steps to suspend the water supply.
“The government has now decided that schools should pay the water bills. to pay the water bill of the schools from the school. So far it has been paid from the treasury.”
“Water is a necessity for a school. Obviously, the parents will have to pay for this. Or should it be paid out of the school principal’s pocket? Should the teachers collect and pay? This is to be paid after collecting money from the parents. Schools don’t have big funds. That’s why this is a serious problem. Next is the electricity bill.”
“Schools have been asked to pay the latest water bill but also the outstanding amounts from January 2022. How can this be paid?”
“Schools have also reached red notices. One principal had prevented the supply from being disconnected after calling the Education Ministry secretary.”
