80% children in Sooriyawewa, Hambantota malnourished | Breaking News

A survey conducted in the Sooriyawewa Health Division of the Hambantota District has revealed that 80% of the children suffer from malnutrition, Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa of the Medical and Civil Rights Professional Association of Doctors (MCRPA) said.

He said the responsible authorities should immediately visit the rural areas to conduct a proper scientific study and then take urgent steps to provide proper solutions instead of making statements in Colombo about dire conditions in rural areas.

The survey was conducted by a group of representatives of the MCRPA in Koswagawa at Walsapugala in Sooriyawewa on the day before yesterday (19).
Dr. Sanjeewa further said:

“We separately inspected the health cards of the children under the age of five living in the village. We found that 30 per cent of the children are severely malnourished, 50 per cent are moderately malnourished and the remaining 20 per cent are on the verge of becoming malnourished. Many families have three children and all three children are malnourished.”
