Sri lanka News – Sri Lanka plans to expand the cabinet a government minister said on top of 38 junior ministers, as opposition slammed the move which comes as taxes are imposed on the public amid a currency collapse and steep inflation.

“I think the cabinet ministers should be appointed,” Urban Development Minister Prasanna Ranatunga told reporters.

“Another 10 ministers can be appointed to take it to 30. At the moment each minister has many institutions under them. If this is done quickly these institutions are distributed among these ministers it will be helpful.”

He said Namal Rapaksa was a suitable to get a ministry as he got the highest votes in Hambantota district.

“This fear of Rajapaksa’s is with the opposition and the drug addicts and underworld people in the Aragalaya.”

Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe appointed 38 non-cabinet ministers.

Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa slammed the move saying the Sri Lanka Podujana Party founded by the Rajapaksa family was still pulling the strings.

“In this bankrupt country, people are suffering. Despite this, without any shame, 37 ministers have been appointed according to the list of the crow.”

Ministers are entitled to staff, vehicles and have control over agencies assigned to them. Political analysts say the resources puts them in a better position to fight an election.
