GGG caused Rs.4.9 mn damages to Galle Face Green – UDA | Breaking News

The damage caused to the land named ‘Gotagogama’ which was set up near the Galle Face Green is about Rs. 4.9 million, the Urban Development Authority (UDA) said.

The assessment report prepared by the UDA said that Rs.150,000 will be spent for basic preparations of the ground while Rs. 4.75 million will be spent for restoring the ground with new grass.

Minister in charge Prasanna Ranatunga recently instructed the UDA to take necessary legal actions to recover the damages from the protesters for causing damages to the area near the Galle Face Green belonging to the UDA.

The protesters remained in the area illegally for about three months demanding former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to resign.

After the resignation of President Rajapaksa, the court informed the activists to leave the area and accordingly they had to vacate the premises.

Since many unauthorized constructions have been installed in the area, the right of the general public to freely use the area was also hindered.

All these actions are in violation of the Urban Development Act.

Accordingly, the authority says that they have been empowered to take actions.
