The main cause of unemployment in the country is a lack of enrollment in technology faculties, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said.
During a speech at the ministry, he stated that 75% of university students used to apply for arts and commerce faculties, while 25% enroll in science and technology faculties, which has caused unemployment in the country.
“The main cause of unemployment in the country is a lack of enrollment in technology faculties.”Students in rural areas do not have the resources to begin their studies in technological subjects. The main issue with them is that they do not have qualified teachers for mathematics, science and English subjects, “the Minister said.
Therefore, the ministry has decided to suspend all unsuccessful educational projects with immediate effect and said the country has come to a point where it can start successful projects after proper review.
“We cannot move forward by thinking in the traditional way. “We should think outside the box while taking policy decisions, “he said.
The ministry is considering a decision to promote the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) concept in schools, including in rural areas.
The Minister added that if the country were able to transform education in the country as per the STEAM concept, students would not want to stage any protest demanding employment. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
