SLPP against 22nd Amendment | Breaking News

Reports state that parliamentary-majority-holding SLPP has decided to oppose the 22nd amendment to the constitution, which prevents dual citizenship holders from contesting in Sri Lankan elections.

It is said they have informed the President that they will be voting against the amendment, if presented in parliament, adding that this decision was taken as the amendment was created to target one particular person.

A decision will also be taken on SLPP members being allowed to vote on the 22nd amendment according to their discretion.

The SLPP also hopes to bring in a suggestion to extend the time the President is allowed, for the dissolution of parliament. At present it is 2.5 years and they will seek an increase to 4.5 years.
