Sri lanka News – Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will send his resignation letter within the day on Wednesday July 13 and an election in parliament to elect a new president will take place on July 20 as planned, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said.
In a statement issued to the media, Abeywardena asked the people to remain calm and peaceful and have no doubt that the planned election for a new president from within the current parliament will go ahead as planned.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled to the Maldives earlier on Wednesday, the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) confirmed.
The Speaker previously announced that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has been appointed acting president authorised to carry out presidential duties on Rajapaksa’s behalf.
Thousands of protestors have gathered outside the prime minister’s office on Flower Road, Colombo, demanding his resignation. (Colombo/Jul13/2022)
