Sri Lanka opposition politicians Hirunika Premachandra, Rehan Jayawickreme arrested at protest | Sinhala News

Sri lanka News – Sri Lanka former opposition parliamentarian Hirunika Premachandra and former Weligama Urban Council Chairman Rehan Jayawickreme have been arrested along with seven others outside the president’s official residence in Fort Colombo.

Police spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said four women including Premachandra and five men were taken into custody on Wednesday July 06 around noon, though he could not confirm the arrest of Jayawickreme.

Premachandra and Jayawickreme, both members of the main opposition Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB), and a group of protestors had gathered outside the President’s House in Fort earlier Wednesday morning demanding President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s resignation.

Social media footage showed the group being boarded to a police bus, where Jayawickreme was heard saying they have been arrested and asking for Premachandra’s mobile phone to be returned.

Premachandra has been leading a series of protests of her own against the government, the last protest being against Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Monday July 04. (Colombo/Jul06/2022)
