President of the Lanka Private Bus Owners Association – Gemunu Wijeratne has said that regional depots are refusing and restricting fuel disbursements for private buses.
This is despite the government previously stating that fuel will be released from depots operated by the Sri Lanka Transport Board for private buses as well.
He has said not even 1,000 buses will function today and there is a possibility that private buses will completely come to a standstill.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) claims that steps have been taken to operate SLTB buses at full capacity.
Sri Lanka Railways too says sufficient fuel reserves are available to operate all trains.
However, the Station Masters’ Association has said train services could be disrupted further if railway employees are unable to report for duty in personal vehicles due to the fuel shortage.
