Police spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa has said that if boats carrying illegal immigrants are seized by Australian authorities, they would be set on fire by them.
He also said that 399 people have been arrested by the Sri Lanka Police and Sri Lanka Navy so far in 2022 for attempting to migrate to Australia illegally.
The Police spokesman said that legal action was taken against the suspects.
SSP Thalduwa also said that it was reported that smugglers accept Rs. 200,000 – Rs. 1,000,000 to assist those who attempt to illegally migrate.
He warned that traffickers will be charged with 1-5 years of jail time.
