Sri lanka News – Sri Lanka Police have arrested another 117 people in connection with the May 09 violent mob attacks island wide, police spokesman said.
Police Spokesman Nihal Thalduwa said the police so far has arrested 1,708 suspects with regard to 852 mob attack incidents reported island wide.
“On Tuesday (24) only we arrested 117. From that, 78 were released on bail and 32 are in remand prison” Thalduwa said on Wednesday.
Mob attacks erupted island wide on May 09 after the former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s supporters brutally attacked unarmed and peaceful protestors who have been demanding the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and then Prime Minister Rajapaksa in Colombo
“So far from the initiation of the investigation, we have arrested a total of 1,708 with 900 released on bail and 751 in the remand prison,” Thalduwa said.
A separate investigation is being carried out by the Criminal Investigation Department on the attacks that happened in Colombo Galle Face protestors site.
“The CID has arrested 25 in their investigation and all of them are in remand prison” Thalduwa said. (Colombo/ May 25/2022)
