UAE ruler changes after 18 years | Breaking News

Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan was elected as the president of the Gulf Arab state by a federal supreme council, international media reported.

His appointment came with the demise of United Arab Emirates’ President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, after battling illness for several years.

Sheikh Khalifa took over as the UAE’s second president in November 2004, succeeding his father as the 16th ruler of Abu Dhabi, the richest of the federation’s seven emirates.

With his appointment Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan becomes the third president in UAE’s history.
