The Kelaniya SLPP Provincial Councilor Duminda Nirantha Perera, who was arrested in connection with the assault on the Kelaniya University students protest, has been remanded until April 22nd.
He was produced before Mahara Acting Magistrate Ramani Seneviratne yesterday (14).
It was noteworthy that many lawyers appeared on behalf of the students pro bono.
A group of students led by the Kelaniya University Students’ Union had started a protest in Kiribathgoda and had constructed a stage.
Later the provincial councilor Duminda Perera had come there and broken down the stage erected by the students.
He had also assaulted several of the students and later the Kiribathgoda Police had come to the scene and had arrested him.
It is also reported that the suspect was intoxicated at the time of the incident.
