Red alert for 19 districts on severe lightning: Met Dept. | Sri Lanka News

A Red alert on thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning has been issued for 19 districts, the Department of Meteorology said today.

Accordingly, thundershowers accompanied by lightning are likely to occur at several places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Central, Uva and North-Western provinces and in Mannar, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, Galle and Matara districts during this evening or night.

Heavy showers of above 50 mm can be expected in some places in these areas.

Therefore, the general public is cautioned to take necessary precautions to safeguard themselves against the squall and lightning, the department said.

Accordingly, the 19 districts which are named as follows: Mullaitivu, Mannar, Vavuniya, Puttalam, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Kurunegala, Matale, Gampaha, Kegalla, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Badulla, Colombo, Kalutara, Ratnapura, Galle, Matara and Moneragala they said.
