Four journalists of ‘Derana’ media station have been hospitalised with grievous injuries after being brutally assaulted by the police STF during yesterday’s (31) protest in Mirihana.
Journalists Sumedha Sanjeewa, Nissanka Werapitiya, Pradeep Wickramasinghe and Lahiru Chamara have been assaulted in this manner.
Sumedha Sanjeewa was assaulted while taking footage of the incident. He was admitted to the Kalubowila Hospital today (01) morning while under arrest and he had cuts on his body when being admitted.
Provincial reporter – Nissanka Werapita was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital with grievous injuries. He has even undergone a surgery earlier today.
Nugegoda reporter – Pradeep Wickramasinghe also received injuries after being assaulted by the STF.
Lahiru Chamara was the first Derana journalist who had reached the Mirihana protest. He is currently receiving treatment with severe injuries to his legs.
Several other journalists including Avanka Kumara of News First and Sulochana Gamage of Lake House had also been injured while reporting last night’s protest.
However, authorities today said that 37 people including 03 journalists were injured in the protest.
