Sri Lanka president Gotabaya Rajapaksa restricts comments on Facebook page | Sinhala News

Sri lanka News – Social media users in Sri Lanka were in for a surprise Wednesday (30) night when they learnt that they could not leave comments on certain posts on the official Facebook page of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The comment section of two posts published on Wednesday carried the declaration: “Gotabaya Rajapaksa limited who can comment on this post.”

Social media researcher Sanjana Hattotuwa tweeted that the apparent restriction of comments was “revealing”.

Analysts say the popularity of President Rajapaksa and the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has taken a nosedive amid Sri Lanka’s prevailing economic crisis, one of the worst in the island nation’s history. Daily power cuts, long queues for fuel and other essentials have become a common feature of everyday life in the country, and people have taken to the streets in bursts of spontaneous protest.

Social media has also served as a site of protest and agitation, media commentators say.

A spokesperson for the president’s media division was not immediately available for comment. (Colombo/Mar31/2022)
