Fish stalls along the Dewata and Jakotuwa beach which are said to be illegal, have been removed today (14) as a part of the beautification drive in the city of Galle.
The measure has been taken by the Galle Municipal Council and the Coast Conservation Department.
Speaking to media, Galle Mayor Priyantha Sahabandu has said that 23 such fish stalls were removed amid police security.
Although traders have been promised alternative locations, no date has been mentioned.
News footage shows traders lamenting about the sudden loss of their stalls and alleging that their stalls have been demolished because the President was expected to visit the city.
Meanwhile, a media release issued by the Ministry of Plantations says that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is scheduled to inspect the country’s first technology park near the Pinnaduwa entrance on the Southern Expressway in Galle on Thursday (17).
