Minister of Tourism Prasanna Ranatunga, Chairperson of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau Kimali Fernando and their entourage have spent Rs. 120,542,316.39 to participate in five tourism fairs in four countries during this year.
The Tourism Minister had participated in four out of the five tours.
He is said to have visited Germany, France and Russia, but had never met with the tourism ministers of those countries, according to internal sources in the Ministry of Tourism. (A detailed report is below)
According to the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau data, 104,989 tourists have visited the country between January and November this year.
However, in 2020, 507,311 tourists had arrived in Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, the number of tourist arrivals from March to November last year was less than 100,000 (99,941).
According to sources from the Ministry of Tourism, 40% of the visitors are Indian tourists.
Most of them had come for quarantine purposes and thus no progress has been made compared to the amount spent on tourism promotion for the last one year.
Another 631 million allocated for next year’s foreign tours
The estimated cost of participating in 16 tourist fairs for tourism promotion next year is Rs. 631 million.
