The owner of a jewellery shop on Sea Street in Pettah had stormed into another jewellery shop, and attacked the owner with a machete seriously injuring him yesterday morning (15).
The businessman who was seriously injured in the incident is being treated at the Intensive Care Unit of the Colombo National Hospital.
The suspect businessman who carried out the attack had taken the machete with the blood on it and surrendered to the Pettah Police while the public watched in horror.
Both millionaire businessmen were said to be friends over a long period of time but had fallen out over some issue.
At around 10.20 yesterday morning, the suspect had had gone to the other shopkeeper’s jewellery shop carrying a 2 ½ foot machete in a bag and had stabbed the businessman who was there, police said.
At the time of the incident, four employees of the shop and a female customer had also been there and all of them had run out of the shop, police said.
While the public watched in horror, the suspect had then come out of the shop with the blood dripping machete, got into a three wheeler and headed to the police station.
According to the police, the victim had sustained serious injuries to his head and arm.
The suspect businessman is a 43-year-old resident of the Kotahena area.
The entire incident was recorded on the CCTV cameras like a South Indian film, the police said.
The suspect is scheduled to be produced in court today (16).
