ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has allowed the import of ‘special fertilizer’ for vegetables at a meeting with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa but no decision has been taken for paddy, Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage told parliament.
“Permission was given to import special (visheshitha) fertilizer for vegetables,” Minister Aluthgamage said.
“No decision was taken to allow chemical fertilizer for paddy.”
Reports said no subsidies will be given for fertilizer.
Sri Lanka’s agriculture sector is in crisis due to ban on chemical fertilizer, with farmers protesting.
Vegetable prices are now soaring, amid rains which also reduces harvests.
Minister said the decision to allow a specialist fertilizer and some agrochemicals was made due to was made also because of the heavy rains. (Colombo/Nov22/2022)
