A box containing communication equipment was found on the beach near the Mannar Army camp last evening (20), the Mannar Police Special Task Force (STF) said.
A fisherman in the area, who spotted an unidentified communication box on the beach near the Mannar Army camp, informed the security forces.
Officers from the Bomb Disposal Squad of the Police Special Task Force (STF) inspected the box and found there was nothing alarming inside and suspected to have been used to monitor changes in the weather and weather conditions.
However, it had not yet been determined who dropped it into the sea, but it is suspected that it might have been dumped the US-made device by ships into the sea.
Further investigations are being carried out by the Mannar STF personnel. (Romesh Madushanka)
