A tense situation has prevailed after a group of residents surrounded the Panamure Police Station following the death of a man inside a cell.
A 37-year-old father of three, a resident of Welipotha Yaya, Panamura, who was arrested following a complaint lodged by his wife over a family dispute, has reportedly hanged himself inside the police cell.
However, residents of the area stormed outside the Panamura police station this morning and alleged that the man had been beaten to death by police.
Traffic on the Kolonna – Embilipitiya road has also been disrupted due to the situation.
A group of members of the Samagi Jana Balawega engaged in a protest in Parliament today against this incident.
Meanwhile, police said two policemen have been interdicted over the incident.(DSB)
