If someone can take measures to stop the use of backup vehicles for ministers and VIP personnel, it will be a huge relief for us, Batik, Handloom and Local Apparel Products State Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara said.
He told the media that they have made many contributions towards the country's benefit in this difficult situation.
“Ministry's expenses were slashed completely, including the Ministers'. The ministries have not been allocated funds to purchase new vehicles, for building, construction, renovations, or even to purchase furniture this year. This crisis will be worse in the years to come. We understand that commitment lies on our shoulders and we are ready to sacrifice anything that we can,” he said.
It would be a great relief for us if someone could step in to stop using backup vehicles. We can see backup vehicles with several security personnel provide protection to VIPs on the road, the State Minister said.
“I have never used a backup vehicle before. I have done what I can do to save money for the government. I do not want to burn fuel in another vehicle because me. Through this I make a cordial request to other Ministerial colleagues to do everything they can to reduce the government's expenses. The President has shown this by example. I think it would be nice if everyone does that, “he said.
There is no apparent need for such protection now, the State Minister added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
